If your mobile or cell phone is lost or stolen...

To report a stolen or lost mobile phone, you should call your network operator, service provider or 08701 123 123. They will deactivate your SIM card and handset so that it will not work on any UK network. Remember, it makes sense to backup the numbers stored in your mobile phone!

The relevant network operator numbers are:

Tell your network provider your IMEI Number and your SIM serial number. The IMEI number will then be entered onto the network's central database. Once it's been reported, the handset will be immobilised, deactivating it across every network. Even if your SIM card has been changed, your lost or stolen handset will no longer work. The 15 digit IMEI number is found on a sticker underneath the battery, or on screen by simply keying *#06# into most phones.

You should also contact your local police station, or the police station nearest to where the theft or loss took place, and inform them of what happened.

Security Tips

Make sure you note all your phone handset serial number details in your allmynumbers account AND make sure you have a record of your own mobile phone number. Many people struggle to remember their own number.

Use a PIN to access your mobile or cell phone and get into the habit of locking it.

Use a security marker pen to write your post code and house number on the back and inside of your handset.

Check out your home insurance to see if your phone is covered. If not consider taking out special mobile phone insurance.

Don't leave your phone lying around, for example on a desk or on a car dash board.

Don't top up your phone with credit in public. This will give a would be thief the chance to see the type of phone you own, and that there's credit on it.

If you are ever mugged for your phone - DO NOT TRY AND FIGHT - Let them take the phone and contact your police and operator at the earliest convenience.
